Greg Patterson and James Allen Canady Attend National Educational Conference for Financial Advisors

Stadium

Morehead City, NC (November 3, 2017)—Greg Patterson, Managing Partner, and James Allen Canady, CFO and Partner, of Atlantic Wealth Management in Morehead City, North Carolina recently attended a national educational conference for independent financial advisors. Hosted by Commonwealth Financial Network®, the nation’s largest privately held Registered Investment Advisor–independent broker/dealer, the event drew 1,641 affiliated advisors, staff, guests, and sponsors from across the nation. Participants gathered in San Diego, California, October 11–14, 2017, where they connected and collaborated with peers, colleagues, and industry partners to strengthen their leadership skills and enhance the high-end service that they provide to clients.

With the theme, “Personal Currency: Human Connections|Patterns for Success,” the conference encouraged attendees to explore how the relationships that they build, nurture, and sustain—both professionally and personally—influence their success.

Members of Commonwealth’s leadership team addressed attendees, with Wayne Bloom, CEO, speaking candidly about the firm’s decision-making process—specifically addressing how valued input from and open lines of communication with advisors have helped inform and drive decisions with regard to the Department of Labor fiduciary rule. Bloom expressed appreciation for and a resolute commitment to Commonwealth’s 1,710 advisors and affirmed that, looking ahead, they are perfectly positioned for success. John Rooney, managing principal of the firm’s San Diego office, highlighted some key growth milestones for the firm. Brad McMillan, chief investment officer, provided perspective on the markets and economy.

Renowned keynote speakers offered topical remarks tailored specifically to an advisor audience. In an informal “fireside chat,” Madeleine Albright, Secretary of State (1997–2001), joined by Commonwealth’s Joni Youngwirth, managing principal, practice management, offered insights about effective diplomacy. Citing being prepared, being yourself, and maintaining a sense of humor as critical elements to building bridges, Albright outlined the real keys to diplomacy as the ability to put oneself in another person’s shoes and to have a clear understanding of what the other person wants. Ken Blanchard, author, leadership expert, and cofounder of international management training and consulting firm The Ken Blanchard Companies®, spoke about the innate leader in everyone, encouraging all to bring a positive mind-set to personal interactions and to practice humility. International portrait photographer Platon brought the conference theme to life, sharing powerful personal stories about connecting on a human level with his subjects—from Bill Clinton to Vladimir Putin—to tell the most authentic story possible through his photographs.

“Being able to connect with and learn from industry experts and my peers is always a rewarding experience,” said Greg Patterson, Managing Partner of Atlantic Wealth Management. “The strategies and ideas that I am able to bring back and put to work on behalf of our clients will benefit all of us.”

Patterson and Canady attended a wide array of educational sessions, panel discussions, and networking events on topics ranging from wealth management, retirement opportunities, and business growth strategies to the changing regulatory landscape, evolving fiduciary responsibilities, and information security and privacy issues.

We had pulled pork bbq, dynamite homemade baked beans and coleslaw, hushpuppies galore, and tasty desserts! Our toes were tapping to the sounds of Keith Chandler DJ/Deaf Ear/Sweet Sounds Records as he spun fantastic toe-tapping music throughout the evening.

And even though our outside theme turned inside due to the rainstorm, we were welcomed by Greg Patterson and JA Canady, Kim Wadford and Katy Barclay of Atlantic Wealth Management! Our hosts for the night couldn't have been more fun and festive! The inside of this lovely historic home, now their wonderful office space, is filled with beautiful rooms where we filled it with laughter, song, mingling and of course a bit of eating. Greg gave us a brief overview of their business and what they can do for all of us to ensure we still have money in the long run, and then we raffled off some great gifts from our business sponsors!

Atlantic Wealth Management hosts "Diamonds & Dividends" event at the Coral Bay Club

Atlantic Wealth Management hosts event for women at the Coral Bay Club

Atlantic Beach, NC (April 20, 2017) -- In 1935, a woman named Grace Groner purchased three $60 shares in Abbott Laboratories where she worked for 43 years. When she passed away at the age of 100, Grace’s $180 investment was worth $7 million.

While Grace’s story is unique, it’s a true story that demonstrates the power of compounding. And it’s exactly the point that financial advisors Greg Patterson and James Allen Canady conveyed at their firm’s most recent event, “Diamonds & Dividends.” Atlantic Wealth Management and J.R. Dunn Fine Jewelers co-hosted the social and educational afternoon gathering on Thursday, April 20th at the Coral Bay Club.

About the event

Guests enjoyed a delicious spread of food and fellowship while perusing beautiful displays of pearl and diamond jewelry. Two women won door prizes and everyone took home tips from local jeweler J.R. Dunn about how to care for their jewelry. The advice came complete with goodie bags of jewelry cleaner.

Guests also had the chance to hear from Atlantic Wealth Management about the power of rising dividends in a well-crafted investment plan.

During his presentation, Patterson held up a bottle of Tide laundry detergent, noting parent company Procter & Gamble is a well-known company that pays dividends. Patterson also noted the surprising cost of the almost $10 bottle of detergent. The reason? Inflation.

“Inflation”, Canady pointed out, “is a big concern for our clients. Many people planning for retirement are faced with the question, ‘As consumer prices keep rising, will my savings be enough?’”

Rising dividends from growing companies are one strategy to secure rising income due to the power of compounding interest.

To further emphasize the power of compounding, Canady shared an illustration. Imagine, he said, putting one grain of rice on the first square of a 64-square chess board and doubling the grains of rice each time all the way up to the 64th square. He asked if anyone could guess how many grains there would be on the final square. The answer?

18 million trillion grains of rice.

Despite dividends earning potential, Patterson and Canady noted that dividends are just one piece of the overall solution for their clients.

“Maintaining a well-crafted investment strategy involves using multiple assets across different sectors and countries,” said Patterson. “This diversification tends to smooth out the volatility of the market over time. Our advice and counsel is customized to our client’s unique situation and delivered with care and concern for them and their families.”
